Semi-Automated Solutions for Sports Endeavors

Background

Turning manual packing and shipping into a streamlined operation

Sports Endeavors, a leading sporting goods and apparel company, specializes in providing sports equipment, footwear, uniforms, and merchandise for soccer, rugby, and lacrosse around the world. These products come from elite brands such as Adidas, Nike, New Balance, PUMA, Under Armour, and more.

Before partnering with Conveyco Technologies, Sports Endeavors faced significant challenges in its packing and shipping operations. The process was highly manual, leading to high operational costs, slower order processing speeds, and inability to meet service level requirements.

Additionally, the system lacked right-sized packaging capabilities, leading to higher shipping costs and ineffiencies throughout the fulfillment process.

Sports Endeavors sought to significantly reduce the labor-intensive sorting and packing processes, lower shipping expenses, cut order cycle times that were causing exorbitant backlog in packing and failure to meet service level requirements, and improve overall efficiency to meet growing customer demand.

Solution

Conveyco implemented a semi-automated solution using the RightFIT methodology to optimize sorting, packing, and shipping, boosting productivity, reducing labor, and improving accuracy and efficiency.

With new semi-automated solutions, Sports Endeavors achieved a reduction in labor sorting requirements from 10 to 4 operators in the packing and sorting area. The put-wall with ring scanners enabled workers to quickly and accurately scan barcodes on incoming items with the ring scanners and place them accordingly.

To increase packaging efficiency, an automated apparel bagger system was implemented for both single-unit and multi-unit orders. This helped achieve increased efficiency, reduced packaging material waste, and lowered DIM weight shipping costs.

At the induction area, an accumulation conveyor processed multi-unit orders, providing a buffer between incoming totes and the stations where the items are prepared for final packaging. This helped separate the flow of order delivery from the packing process, allowing workers to induct items more smoothly and with less manual handling.

Finally, to optimize final order sortation, an automated sorter directed packaged orders into organized chutes, making it easier and faster for workers to transfer them into outbound mail containers.

KEY DELIVERABLES

  • The project delivered a less than two-year return on investment
  • Annual labor savings were achieved by reducing labor requirements
  • The solution increased throughput, order accuracy, and packaging efficiency
